It's always best to use a bit of sand, rice, or dirt inside your burner to help dissipate the heat from the burning charcoal.   Place lit charcoal on top of sand, followed by the resin or incense you want to burn.   Or invert the metal lid and place the charcoal on the lid, allowing the ash to fall into the bowl.
